Traditions
Hi Everyone, I’m sure you are all busy hustling and bustling
around to get ready to celebrate this wonderful Holiday Season. Those
of you celebrating Hanukah have already started, and those of us
celebrating Christmas, and Kwanza are finishing final preparations
and waiting with anticipation. Just like our WeJoySing program is
based upon traditional folk songs, nursery rhymes, finger plays and
games, our preparations and celebrations of the Holidays are about
the traditions that have been passed down through our families over
the years. These traditions are found in the foods we prepare and
eat, the games that we may play, the stories that we read, the songs
that we sing, and the participation in the religious celebrations of
our choosing.
Traditions bring us wonderful memories of joy and laughter with
our friends and families. It is a way for us to share our love with
others and each other in all that we do. Your families have become a
part of my Holiday tradition when you share them with me for the
Holiday Session. I love the music, the excitement and the joy that I
see from week to week in their little eyes and faces. They have such
wonderful stories to share, and a lot of enthusiasm for everything we
do, including the drums and the bells. Oh those wonderful Jingle
Bells. All you have to do is sit back and watch them sing, play and
in a lot of cases “bounce off the walls” as time gets closer.
My own granddaughters have been having a wonderful time getting
ready for Christmas both at home and at school. Emilie who is 3 saw
the Nativity Play at school, and she is now convinced that “Baby
Jesus” is alive and well and living in Westerville. Evelyn the six
year old is also looking forward to celebrating the Winter Solstice
by putting out bird seed and treats for the wild critters that
frequent their backyard. And, she wants to know why they can’t
celebrate Hanukah as well! We have our CD of songs that we sing as we
travel around town on our “Friday Night Dates” Evelyn’s choice
is “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth”. She is
missing three. Emilie loves “Rudolph”, “Frosty” and of course
they both love “Jingle Bells”. They also have their “Elf on the
Shelf, Bernard”, who has come to visit, and the Advent Tree that
they decorate one day at a time to count down the days. They are
excited to have “Great Nanny”, come to stay overnight and be
there for Christmas morning. I have been informed that she gets to
put the star at the top of the Advent Tree on Christmas morning.
Continue to encourage and enjoy your children’s enthusiasm, play
and joy throughout this Holiday Season. Leave those adult
expectations out on your front porch as much as you can, and get in
there and join in the fun. We will see all of you back in January.
