The JOY of an At-Home-Mom’s Workday

by Mrs. Donna
note

WJSA question frequently asked in social settings is: “Where do you work?”

Often, “stay at home moms” will reply: “Oh I don’t work. I stay at home with our children.”

“My response to that is a hardy giggle!” says Jo Kirk, founder and director of WeJoySing and former stay-at-home-mom, “I’ve been there, done that. Staying at home with our children was a ’24-7’ job. Collapsing in bed at night I’d often tell my husband (and God) ‘I NEVER worked this hard and felt this tired working outside the home!”

Washington Times columnist Carolyn Hax gives this description of the at-home-mom’s work day:

WeJoySing at Home

Some of the must fun I’ve had with WeJoySing has been with my nephews, Jason and Evan. Now three and two years old, both have been in several WeJoySing classes with their mom, dad, and now grandma! Fortunately for me, I’ve also been able to see them in class several times on Monday mornings with Mrs. Lynnette.

WeJoySing for us, however, doesn’t stop when we leave class. The whole family has found times when bounces, wiggles, tickles, etc. are both fun as well as useful. We’ve used them at home, at restaurants, at church (quietly!), really any place where we might need something fun to do. It’s like having an extra bag of tricks when the two year old next to you might just start to get a little out of control if the food doesn’t come soon. So yes, wiggles at the table have worked!

This winter session in the infant classes we have been doing a bounce called “Let’s Go Riding Together”. We bounce face-to-face and then tilt side-to-side going “this way” and “that way”. It reminded me of a video I took not too long ago of my mom and sister doing a bounce with Jason and Evan. The best part is at the very beginning. As soon as the bounce begins, both boys break out into the hugest smiles! This is something I see frequently in classes as well. Bounces are so much fun and such a great way to learn!

So, as much fun as you have in class, remember, what you’re learning is also a great tool to bring home!!

WE JOY SING CLASSES CANCELED- Saturday, January 21st- UPPER ARLINGTON

Good morning!  There will be no classes today, Saturday January 21st, in Upper Arlington, due to icy conditions where I live.  My neighborhood is a sheet of ice here on the East Side, so I imagine yours might be as well.  Stay home and stay safe!!

Lots of “la-las,”

Lisa McClatchy, Children’s Author, shares her “Sheer Excitement” as a WeJoySing Parent and Author

by Mrs. Donna
note

WJSAt WeJoySing, we know that a love of literature begins at birth. As we talk and read to our babies, we are introducing them to the art of storytelling and to good literature.

WeJoySing parent Lisa McClatchy is especially aware of this fact. As an author and mom, not only does she enjoy reading to her own children, she also brings new characters and stories to children everywhere.

Lisa has been working in children’s publishing since 1989. After graduating from The College of Wooster, she moved to New York City to work for Orchard Books, which she describes as “a fabulous children’s publishing company.” Her first year there, two Orchard authors, Gary Paulsen and Janet Taylor Lisle, won Newbery Honors. Lisa says she was inspired by their work and dreamed one day of writing a book herself.

Lisa is, most notably, the author of several “Eloise-Ready-to-Read”books, based on Kay Thompson’s beloved character (Aladdin paperbacks), but she’s thrilled to introduce WeJoySing parents to her new children’s book, “Dear Tyrannosaurus Rex” (2010, Random House). One More Week!!

Dscn0240

It’s been a wonderful holiday break! I have really enjoyed spending time
with my family and enjoying our Christmas traditions. We always hide a
couple gifts, we have “The Elf on the Shelf” to keep on on our toes and my
daughter Ava enjoys dressing as an angel for the Christmas Eve church
service. It’s been very nice to have my husband home for 3 weeks! But I so
miss my WeJoySing children! I can’t wait until next week when my Heart
Strings classes start back up! I miss the children running to my class and
giving me hugs! I miss their excitement and anticipation! I miss seeing
their smiling faces fill up with joy as we sing, dance and play our
instruments! I can’t wait to hear all about what each of you did to
celebrate over the break! Being a WeJoySing instructor is just pure joy!
Because “The More We Get Together The Happier We’ll Be!”

Love, Mrs. Deb

Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah! Let’s Dance!

It was a total delight sharing the Holiday Session with so many of you! Our babies, toddlers, and preschoolers had a great time dancing, singing, and playing through the Shoemaker’s workshop. I’ve certainly enjoyed these photos of “little Elves” dancing in Mrs. Beth’s Granville 2-3 year old class. You’ll see that even the babies got in the act!! Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!
“Sing”cerely and with LOTS of La La’s for all!

Advent

Traditions

Hi Everyone, I’m sure you are all busy hustling and bustling
around to get ready to celebrate this wonderful Holiday Season. Those
of you celebrating Hanukah have already started, and those of us
celebrating Christmas, and Kwanza are finishing final preparations
and waiting with anticipation. Just like our WeJoySing program is
based upon traditional folk songs, nursery rhymes, finger plays and
games, our preparations and celebrations of the Holidays are about
the traditions that have been passed down through our families over
the years. These traditions are found in the foods we prepare and
eat, the games that we may play, the stories that we read, the songs
that we sing, and the participation in the religious celebrations of
our choosing.

Traditions bring us wonderful memories of joy and laughter with
our friends and families. It is a way for us to share our love with
others and each other in all that we do. Your families have become a
part of my Holiday tradition when you share them with me for the
Holiday Session. I love the music, the excitement and the joy that I
see from week to week in their little eyes and faces. They have such
wonderful stories to share, and a lot of enthusiasm for everything we
do, including the drums and the bells. Oh those wonderful Jingle
Bells. All you have to do is sit back and watch them sing, play and
in a lot of cases “bounce off the walls” as time gets closer.

My own granddaughters have been having a wonderful time getting
ready for Christmas both at home and at school. Emilie who is 3 saw
the Nativity Play at school, and she is now convinced that “Baby
Jesus” is alive and well and living in Westerville. Evelyn the six
year old is also looking forward to celebrating the Winter Solstice
by putting out bird seed and treats for the wild critters that
frequent their backyard. And, she wants to know why they can’t
celebrate Hanukah as well! We have our CD of songs that we sing as we
travel around town on our “Friday Night Dates” Evelyn’s choice
is “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth”. She is
missing three. Emilie loves “Rudolph”, “Frosty” and of course
they both love “Jingle Bells”. They also have their “Elf on the
Shelf, Bernard”, who has come to visit, and the Advent Tree that
they decorate one day at a time to count down the days. They are
excited to have “Great Nanny”, come to stay overnight and be
there for Christmas morning. I have been informed that she gets to
put the star at the top of the Advent Tree on Christmas morning.

Continue to encourage and enjoy your children’s enthusiasm, play
and joy throughout this Holiday Season. Leave those adult
expectations out on your front porch as much as you can, and get in
there and join in the fun. We will see all of you back in January.
